Germal Plus
A Broad-Spectrum Preservative for Cosmetic & Personal Care Formulations
🌿 What is Germal Plus?
Germal Plus is a synthetic preservative blend composed of two active ingredients:
- Diazolidinyl Urea (a formaldehyde-releasing agent)
- Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate (IPBC) (an antifungal agent).
Together, they provide broad-spectrum protection against bacteria, yeast, and mold in water-based cosmetics and toiletries.
✨ Key Features
- Broad-Spectrum Efficacy: Targets gram-positive/negative bacteria, fungi, and yeast.
- Water-Soluble: Ideal for lotions, creams, shampoos, and liquid formulations.
- Synergistic Action: Enhanced preservation when combined with other preservatives (e.g., parabens, phenoxyethanol).
- pH Compatibility: Works in formulations with pH 3–8.
🧴 Applications
- Skincare: Moisturizers, serums, toners.
- Haircare: Shampoos, conditioners, styling products.
- Personal Care: Body washes, liquid soaps, baby wipes.
- Household: Wet wipes, cleaning sprays.
⚠️ Safety & Regulatory Considerations
- Formaldehyde Release: Diazolidinyl urea releases trace formaldehyde, a known sensitizer. Safe at low concentrations but avoid in “formaldehyde-free” claims.
- IPBC Restrictions: Limited to ≤0.02% in leave-on products (EU); avoid in lip/body products with high mucous membrane contact.
- Allergies: Patch-test for sensitive skin; not recommended for damaged skin
